Wasn’t the weekend sunshine gorgeous? We had a big family birthday BBQ planned so it was wonderful to have the weather on our side!
As there were a mix of vegetarians and meat eaters at the get together we had two barbeques on the go, with my husband manning the meat-free one. I’ve taken a photo of my first plateful (yes, I really do eat that much…) to show you what a fantastic choice us veggies had.
I grew up in South Africa, so barbeques (or “braais” as they are known there) are a big part of our family culture. Because of this I really wanted to make the effort to ensure that the food was as appealing to the vegetarians amongst us as to the rest.
At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, I think I succeeded!
For those of you who are interested, these are some of the barbequed foods we had:
- Pineapple and vegetable kebabs made by my Dad
- Halloumi, mushroom and vegetable kebabs made by moi
- Fry’s vegetarian sausages
- Corn on the cob cooked in foil
- Jacket potatoes cooked in foil
- Whole onions cooked in foil
- Garlic bread and cheesy pesto bread
This is obviously in addition to all the salads and other hot side dishes cooked beforehand (not to mention desserts) that we had as well, so you can see we didn’t feel at all deprived. There were plenty of leftovers too, so I’ve been taking some time off cooking since then too – one of my favourite things about barbeques!
I’m quite excited about seeing what other vegetarian BBQ dishes I can find for the rest of the season, so if you have any favourites you’d like to share with me, please feel free to comment below. And let’s hope the weather continues to play ball…

Great site, I have added a link to you from my site as I think my readers will find vegetarian kids website useful.

Thanks Maggie, that’s kind – your site is great, so I really appreciate it.
I love the sound of the pineapple and veg kebabs…what veg did you use?
Thanks Lisa – my Dad made those, using peppers, onions and cherry tomatoes with the pineapple. He also made a sweet & sour sauce to go with them. They were very yummy!
